Voice of the Martyrs

Hi 5th Grade,

The final thing we're going to do in our unit of Peter is to write a letter to a persecuted Christian.  These Christian brothers and sisters are living out the life that Peter describes exactly in his letter.

I would like you to read the stories of these brave Christians and to prayerfully choose an individual you would like to write a letter to.

Remember, this is real life and this is a real person who will receive your letter and be encouraged.  Pray before choosing that the Holy Spirit will guide your heart.

Chapel Reflection - Words of Thanksgiving and Praise

Greg D.
God is greater than sin.  Nothing is impossible for him except to stop loving us.  Sometimes we think he would because we are so bad sometimes.

Chase H.
God, thank you for bringing Madison and McKala back to us.  Thank you for protecting them.  Thank you for saving Mr. Peters.  Please go into his heart and save him.

Bianca D.
Dear God, I am just so happy that I am alive and I am very thankful for having so many people in my life that care about me and my education and that you will just continue that love and kindness in everyone's lives.  Be kind even to the very bad people and you will continue to bless us in the wonderufl lives you have given us.  In Jesus' name, Amen!!!  :)
P.S.  I hope you will help the Peters family in healing their difficulties in life right now.  Again, AMEN.

Leah V.
 Dear God,
Thank you for giving me birth.  You know that when I was born I came out early and you know that I was going to die, but with you help, I lived.  You knew that I had a hard time birthing but with your help I lived.  I know that it was not the doctors that saved me.  It was you.  Every breath I take I owe it to you and I thank you for giving me birth.  I have life because of you.  In your name I pray, Amen.

Alexis
I praise God that Madison and McKala are found and safe.  I pray for their father when he is in jail for the next 3 or more years that the Peters will be fine and in your protection.  Thank you for giving my sister life and for saving Sophia (my sis) from dying Lord.  Thank you for food and water.  For my Dad's fun personality, my Mom's serious personlity and for my two sister's personality.  You are the best God, you are almighty, holy and powerful Lord.  Cleanse my sins and give me wisdom.  In Jesus name, Amen.

Hannah
Dear Lord, thank you for bringing me to this school so I can be close to family (from old to 4 months old).  Thank you so I can be with children.  Thank you that I can play and to join in laughter.  Thank you that I can rejoice over this day; this is the day two girls were lost and now they are found.  Help me to be the salt and light of this school

Leighton
I praise you God that you have kept the girls safe and they were found.  I praise you that Ed Peters will go to a "time out" for a while to learn his lesson that kidnapping children is a wrong thing to do and that you have forgiven him.
Dear Lord,
Thank you that Madi and Kala are safe and I hope that you will go into Mr. Peter's heart and help him have a better future.  I hope Mr. Peters will not try to escape from jail because that will just cause more trouble.  Mr. Peters is a good guy but he made some bad choices in his life.  Amen.

Olivia
When the Peters girls were returned safely I was so happy.  Inside I was saying "YES, YES, thank you God for protecting Maddy and McKala."  I prayed nonstop every moment I could and I hope that Mrs. Peters will have the girls home and they will be ok.  I pray that Mr. Ed will think about what he has done while he is in prison.  I pray that he will make a better choice next time.  In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Emily
I praise God that he brought back the two girls safely.
Dear Lord, Thank you so much for everything!  For a free country, safety for the girls.  I thank you for my family, shelter, food, water.  I am also thankful for all my friends and a Christian school to learn about you and get education.  Thank you for all my pets, Julie, Oreo, Boo, Baxter, and Max.  Thank you for a boat so I can go fishing with my Dad.  Thank you for my grapefruit tree and my orange tree.  Thank you for a trampoline.  Thank you for all my cousins.  Amen.

Makenzi
I thank God for Madi and McKala...that they are safe and on there way back home to school. Thank that they are coming home to their mother.

Beau
Dear God, thank you that you brought the Peters back safely.  Thank you for all you do everyday.  Thank you for food, clothes, and shelter.  Thank you for a wonderful school that teaches about your Gospel.  I thank you for the sun, moon, stars, and my family.  In Jesus' name, Amen.

Dylan
I thank God for loving me and taking care of me and my family.  I thank him for letting the girls come home without any harm and I thannk Him for my dog and school.

Josh
God gives me too much.  I want to give back.  Some people don't have a home.  I would let them sleep in my bed if they needed.  We all are sinners.  We sin.  One sin is as bad as the other.  It could be from killing someone, to stealing a pencil.  It is our human nature to sin.

Isa
Dear God, I am thankful and gratfeul that Madison and McKala Peters are not harmed and are heading back to Florida.  I am thankful for an amazing family that loves me.  I am thankful for a school, shelter, and food.  I am very happy for the girls to come back to school.  I am thankful Mrs. Peters does not have to worry about her daughters anymore.

Praise the Lord! The Peters have been found! They are safe! They're coming home!!!

If you haven't heard, the Peters have been found and they are all safe.  Praise the Lord!

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star - Mozart

Hi 5th Grade,

Maybe this could have been me if I practiced more when I was young!  I DO regret not having a better atttiude when I was young when I was FORCED to play piano.  Nonetheless, life is full of lessons, isn't it.  I wake up to this piece of music every morning..it's my alarm tone on my phone.  Enjoy.

Put a comment as to your favorite variation...it's a shorter version that what we listened to in class today.

Daily Prayers for the Peters

Hi 5th Grade,

Below is a post I wrote  today on last year's 5th grade blog.  If you want to give words of encouragement and support to Kari Peters or would like to write a message to the girls, you are welcome to do so.  The address is 5goh.blogspot.com.  On the right side bar of this year's class  blog, there is a link as well.

Dear SRCS Family,

If you are like my family, we have been deeply impacted by the events surrounding the Peters family this past week.  I have found my self often feeling completely helpless and I have been reminded through scripture of the absolute need to pray.  Our God is the creator of the heavens and the earth, the King of King, Lord of Lords and I know He is the lovers of all our souls.

I met with the entire 6th grade this morning and we agreed to restart the 5th grade blog so that we can post daily prayers.  A student each day will write a prayer and the blog will also be a place where students can post words of encouragement and support.

Also, I am praying that if somehow, Madison has an opportunity to get online, she will be led, through the Holy Spirit's prompting, to check out the blog and read information on how to get in contact with authorities and her Mom, Kari.

If there's any website that Madison has visited more often, it is this blog.  She has literally been on 500 to 1000 times in the past year and I am hoping she will check out the blog again, through habit.

Madison we miss you and your sister dearly.  We are praying unceasingly for your return.  You are loved and we trust, through God's help, we will see you again soon.  I'll even give you a hug!

Hi 5th Grade,

We were presented with some powerful ideas today.  Here is the video we watched this morning.

I would like each of you to respond tonight on this entry of the blog.

Share with the class how God "stirred" your heart this morning.  Share how you felt as you watched the video and heard Ian's story.  Share how you were inspired as you heard the 6th graders tell you what they did.  Share any ideas you have on how we can love and help this organization.

Bianca and Leighton's HW

Hi Bianca and Leighton,
We missed you both today.  Here is your HW for the weekend.

1.  AR - 30 minutes/day
2.  Blog:  read Filial Piety Stories.
-->  Write a paragraph:  State, explain and illustrate what filial piety is.
3.  Spelling List - Friday Folder
4.  Big Wave - finish all Socratic Questions

Filial Piety

Today, in Novel Study, I introduced to you the Asian principle of Filial Piety. Here are 4 stories that will start to give you a glimpse of the Asian mindset. Understanding this often unwritten viewpoint, will give you a richer understanding of our first novel, The Big Wave.

As always, if you feel like you have something valuable to contribute, please leave a comment on the blog. I think everyone, including myself, would love to read your thoughts.

Dear to him
Tan Zi was a nobleman in the State of Tan during the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC). His aged parents suffered from eye diseases and needed to drink deer's milk as part of their treatment. He therefore disguised himself in a deerskin and sneaked into a herd of deer in the mountains to obtain deer's milk. Once, when he was taking deer's milk, a hunter mistook him for a deer and was going to shoot him. He revealed himself and told the truth to the hunter. The hunter respected his filial piety and escorted him out of the mountains.

Imperial example
Liu Heng was Emperor Wen of the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 24). His mother, Empress Dowager Bo, was once ill for three years. He attended to his mother each day after dealing with affairs of state. For safety reasons, he would test the medicine before he took it to his mother. When his mother finally recovered, he fell ill because of exhaustion. His benevolence and filial piety were praised throughout the kingdom. During his reign, the population flourished and the country prospered.

Nobody does it better
Huang Xiang lived in the Eastern Han Dynasty (AD 25-220). His mother passed away when he was 9. His longing for his late mother and his filial piety for his father were praised by his fellow villagers. He would cool his father's pillow and mat with a fan in the hot summer and warm his father's quilts and cushions with his body in the cold winter. When he grew up, he served as the prefect of Wei county. When the county suffered from a flood, he donated all his possessions to help victims. A saying goes that, "There is no parallel in this world to Huang Xiang".

Melting hearts
Wang Xiang lived in the Western Jin Dynasty (AD 265-316). His mother died when he was young. His stepmother didn't treat him well and often spoke ill of him in front of his father. Because of this, he also lost the love of his father. But when his parents were ill, he took care of them carefully. One cold winter day, his stepmother wanted to eat fresh fish. He took off his clothes and lay on the frozen river to melt the ice with his body. The ice melted and two carp leaped out. He took them home and his stepmother was moved.
